AHI completed a housing construction value chain analysis in the Democratic Republic of Congo with a focus on informal and low-income households’ self-construction practices in Kinshasa and Lubumbashi. The results show that high volatility in construction costs and a lack of access to good quality and affordable materials, along with the high cost of land and the lack of access to housing finance, constrain low-income households in accessing decent housing and the development process. AHI proposed several market-oriented interventions to Habitat for Humanity and ELAN DRC focused on the weak links of the housing construction value chain and with the objective of improving access to housing for low-income populations.
