Smith’s Law of Organizational Scale

August 26, 2005 | Uncategorized

In nature, critters seek to make themselves look bigger than they are.

Puffer fish expand:

Much like trade associations with inflated membership claims

Insects sport large false eyes:

Like advocacy groups claiming credit for past events

… and companies name themselves after enormous geographies, leading to Smith’s Organizational Scale Indicator:

Organizational Scale Indicator

·         The bigger the geography referenced in a company’s name, the smaller the company.

·         The smaller the geography, the bigger the organization.

(However, this applies only if the geography precedes the name, so Bank of America really is huge.)

Thus, Global Repair Service is likely to be a part-time guy in his garage, while State Street Research probably owns the entire North American continent.

As for Galaxy
